How to Tell When Your Water Heater Needs Replacing

There are a number of ways to tell if your water heater needs to be replaced. Let’s examine some of the more obvious signs:

  • Loss of Output: Any water heater can have its current supply of hot water exhausted if the demand is high enough for long enough. That’s not what we’re talking about here, though. If your water heater can’t seem to provide enough water to keep up with even moderate demands any more, it may mean that you need to replace it.
  • Age: Water heaters are manufactured to last between 10 and 15 years. While you can have a water heater last longer than that, the number of problems tends to increase with the age of the water heater. If you have a water heater older than 15 years, you may want to replace it with a newer, more modern model.

Problems that Lead to Water Heater Replacement

There are many different problems that can lead to the need for water heater replacement. One of the most common is rust. The water heater is protected from rust, at least on the inside of the tank, by a part called the "anode rod." The anode rod is a metal rod that is placed into the water heater tank, and slowly degrades over time. As long as the rod is replaced every year or so, the lining of the tank will not rust. However, this protection does not extend to other parts of the water heater. If the water heater starts developing serious rust spots on its exterior, it can eventually compromise the integrity of the tank and cause it to rupture. If you suspect that your water heater has any other issues that may be dangerous to it, call us right away.
