Why You Need Water Heater Maintenance
The reason why water heater maintenance is so much more important than simply keeping an eye out for repair needs has to do with the idea of prevention vs. cure. Water heater problems are progressive. The longer they are allowed to exist, the worse they are going to get. Oftentimes, these problems progress without the homeowner even being aware that they exist in the first place. That gives them plenty of time to get to a point where they can cause serious damage to your water heater, before you’re even aware what is happening. The best way to stop this from occurring is to have your water heater professionally checked at least once a year. That gives us the opportunity to isolate and fix any problems before they have the chance to damage your water heater.
What Happens During a Water Heater Maintenance Appointment
There are a number of different procedures that are conducted during a water heater maintenance appointment, too many to fully describe here. However, we can briefly go over some of the more important things that happen during a water heater maintenance appointment.
- Sediment Flushing: As water flows through your water heater, it tends to leave behind small amounts of minerals. These minerals sink to the bottom of the tank and build up over time. If not addressed, this sediment buildup can eventually become so thick that it insulates the bottom of the tank, preventing heat from reaching the water. In order to prevent this from happening, we flush out the tank to get rid of the sediment during water heater maintenance appointments.
- Checking the Anode Rod: The anode rod is a metal rod that protects the water heater tank from rusting. As long as the anode rod is degrading in the tank, the tank lining will not rust. However, the anode rod will eventually degrade to the point that it needs to be replaced. We always check the anode rod in your water heater tank during a maintenance appointment, and replace it if necessary.
