What’s Wrong with My Water Softener?

A water softener is a device that’s helped so many homeowners keep their plumbing systems in good condition and save themselves from all of the hassles of hard water. And the one thing that any water softener owner knows is that you have to refill the salt from time to time.

That’s why you may become surprised when your water softener suddenly seems to stop working. All of a sudden, you’re noticing the common effects of hard water. Your soap cannot lather, there’s residue in the washing machine, and a white buildup forms on the shower door. And yet, when you check on the salt levels on your water softener, everything seems perfectly fine!

What could be the problem?

Salt Bridge

A salt ridge is what happens when some of the salt clusters together and bunches up at the top of the tank, forming a “bridge” that is actually without any salt underneath. It may appear to be full, even though it is not. Typically, you can break the clumps apart by hitting the outside of the tank with something soft, like a rubber mallet, though we recommend consulting with your plumber first.

Does this problem happen often? Be sure you are using a high-quality salt in your brine tank. Have your tank installed in an area that isn’t particularly humid, if possible. And don’t overfill the tank.

The Wrong Settings

You will only get hard water during the water softener’s regeneration cycle, during which the resin is being cleaned and the minerals in your hard water cannot be absorbed. The regeneration cycle usually happens bout once a week, according to your installer’s settings, which should be sometime with low water usage. You can check on these settings, which may have changed if there was recently a power outage.

A Broken System

Of course, it could be the case that your water softener is broken. Call in a professional to diagnose the problem quickly and help you decide on the right course of action, whether that’s a repair or a brand new system.
