A Few Simple Tricks for Maintaining Your Garbage Disposal

The garbage disposal is such a small part of your plumbing system when you really think about it. Your home’s plumbing system is made up of a network of pipes and drains, as well as all of the fixtures that contribute to convenience and sanitary conditions—sinks, tubs, showers, toilets, a water heater, clothes washer and dishwasher, to name a few. And yet, it’s very likely that the garbage disposal is the portion of your plumbing system that runs into trouble most often!

The kitchen sink takes on a lot of different types of waste, which is part of the reason the disposal is prone to issues. Often, garbage disposal problems can be prevented if you take a few simple steps and avoid using the disposal for anything other than small food items. Learn more about how you can prevent issues and take proper care of your garbage disposal from this list.

  • Keep it clean: Keeping your garbage disposal clean is as simple as using a couple of products you probably already keep on your shelves. Pour a little bit of baking soda into the drains, followed by some vinegar and the drains will clear out fast.
  • Avoid fibrous foods: There are a few foods that may seem perfectly harmless but that can actually have a surprising effect on the performance of your garbage disposal. Fibrous foods (think of anything stringy like celery) can wrap around the blades and force the motor to stop. Throw these in the trash instead, or cut them up into very small pieces if you must use the disposal. Of course, throw out non-foods in the garbage as well, and hard food scraps like meat bones or the seeds of fruit.
  • Look for the reset button: Homeowners are often surprised to find that they could have repaired a broken garbage disposal themselves. If the garbage disposal stops working, check under the sink for a button beneath the unit. If this reset button has popped out, just push it right back in, and this might do the trick.
