We know that life gets busy, and that taking care of minor issues with your heating system isn’t always at the top of your to-do list. But if you notice any of the following issues with your heater, we recommend addressing them as soon as you possibly can. Take a look at some seemingly “minor” heating issues, and why they may actually be a bigger deal than you think.
Insufficient or Intermittent Heat
Okay, so you aren’t getting the level of heat you hoped for from your heating system, but it isn’t cool enough to be unbearable. Do you really have to call a technician right away? This issue can mean one of many things—trouble with the limit switch, a problem with the ignition system, or even just a dirty filter. But in any case, it can spiral out of control, and fast. The heating system overcompensates by working harder to hit the thermostat settings, which may mean worn out parts and a sudden breakdown when you really need it.
Loud noises from a furnace may indicate a delay in the gas ignition process, often due to a buildup of dirt on the burners. While this may seem like a small issue, over time this may cause the heat exchanger to crack, a dangerous issue that could allow carbon monoxide to leak into the home.
Loud banging noises from a boiler can indicate scale buildup, which may be relatively harmless at first, but after many years, it may increase pressure in the boiler significantly and cause breakdowns. We recommend calling a technician to see about getting this issue under control, both for your system and to make it easier to sleep.
Do some of the rooms in your home receive less warm air than others? You may have collapsed ducts or ducts in need of sealing and repair. Broken ductwork reduces airflow to the home, running up your energy bills significantly and overworking the unit.
